Cyprus is switching to a new digital terrestrial television platform, and viewers who watch TV via aerial have until the end of April to upgrade their equipment or risk losing access to all channels.

Am I affected?

The switch affects only viewers who receive their television signal via aerial. If you watch TV through a cable or satellite provider, no action is required.

What is actually changing?

Cyprus is moving from the existing DVB-T platform, currently operated by Velister, to a new DVB-T2 platform operated by HELLAS SAT, following an open tender by the Deputy Ministry of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy. According to HELLAS SAT, DVB-T2 is the most widely used digital terrestrial broadcast standard across Europe, offering better picture quality, more channels and more efficient use of broadcast frequencies.

What do I need to do?

It depends on your television set. If your TV already supports DVB-T2, you only need to rescan your channels. If it does not, you will need to either buy a DVB-T2 decoder or purchase a new television that supports the standard.

When is the deadline?

The transition period runs from March 30, 2026 to April 30, 2026. During this period both the old and new platforms are broadcasting simultaneously, giving viewers time to upgrade without immediately losing access to their channels. After April 30, viewers who have not upgraded will lose their signal.

Are decoders available in shops?

Demand for DVB-T2 decoders has surged, according to philenews, with many consumers unaware of the change until recently. Electrical retailers currently have limited stock, and consumers who leave it to the last minute may struggle to find one. Shops are placing new orders and expect fresh stock to arrive next week.

How did this change come about?

Following an open tender, the Deputy Ministry of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy awarded HELLAS SAT the authorisation to establish and operate the new digital terrestrial television platform in Cyprus, replacing the existing platform run by Velister.
