Cloudflare, a United States-based company providing crucial infrastructure services for millions of websites, experienced a global outage on Tuesday, causing error messages and accessibility problems across a range of major websites.
The unidentified problem meant internet users could not access some of Cloudflare’s customers’ websites, and some site owners were blocked from their performance dashboards. Websites including X (formerly Twitter) and OpenAI reported increased outages simultaneously with Cloudflare’s disruption, according to tracking site Downdetector.
Τhe company announced it saw “services recover,” but warned customers “may continue to observe higher-than-normal error rates as we continue remediation efforts.”
“We do not yet know the cause of the spike in unusual traffic. We are all hands on deck to make sure all traffic is served without errors,” the spokesperson said, adding that the investigation into the spike’s cause would follow.
Cause remains under investigation
A spokesperson for Cloudflare confirmed the disruption began at 11.20am with a “spike in unusual traffic to one of Cloudflare’s services,” which caused some traffic passing through their network to experience errors. While most traffic continued to flow, the company noted elevated errors across multiple services.
As a remedial measure, Cloudflare temporarily disabled an encryption service called Warp in London, causing users there to see a failure to connect.
Cloudflare engineers had scheduled maintenance on datacentres in Tahiti, Los Angeles, Atlanta, and Santiago in Chile for Tuesday, but the company has not confirmed if these activities were related to the outage.
