A major internet outage is affecting dozens of websites, online games, apps and banking services, with Amazon Web Services (AWS) appearing to be the source of the widespread disruption.
Issues began this morning with more than 2,000 reports of AWS outages in the US alone, according to outage tracking site Downdetector. The disruption has impacted numerous popular services including Snapchat, Roblox, Vodafone, Coinbase, and Amazon itself.
Banking services have been particularly affected, with users reporting difficulties accessing online accounts at Lloyds Bank, Halifax, and Bank of Scotland. People attempting to access HMRC services are also experiencing problems.
On its service status page, AWS has confirmed it is experiencing “increased error rates and latencies” across multiple services. “We are actively engaged and working to both mitigate the issue and understand root cause,” the company stated, promising further updates within 45 minutes.
Data from ThousandEyes, a network performance tracking site, shows that many of the outages are concentrated in Virginia, an area considered the global capital for data centers.
The sudden and widespread nature of the disruption is clearly visible on Downdetector’s tracking, which shows simultaneous spikes in reported problems across multiple platforms, indicating a major infrastructure issue rather than isolated service failures.
AWS has not yet provided details on the exact cause of the outage or estimated time for resolution.
