The Limassol Tourism Development and Promotion Company (ETAP Limassol) is creating new digital products for the Kourion archaeological site, using three-dimensional reconstructions and artificial intelligence, with support from the Deputy Ministry of Tourism.

The aim is to give the ancient remains a new, more vivid “voice” and let visitors see not only what survives today but how the site may have looked at the height of its use.

The digital representations will cover both emblematic and lesser-visited monuments at Kourion, offering a different way to explore the site. Where mostly ruins remain visible today, the digital reconstructions will aim to restore their architectural form and recreate the image of a living urban centre.

The use of artificial intelligence to recreate scenes from the past is of particular interest. At Kourion’s ancient stadium, for example, digital scenes of ancient athletic games are planned, so the site is presented not simply as a monument of the past but regains the movement and activity that once characterised it. The stadium dates back to the 2nd century AD.

The project is based on shifting from a traditional archaeological visit to a digital storytelling experience. The technology is not intended to replace the monument itself, but to act as a kind of “window” onto the image it once had.

The initiative forms part of ETAP Limassol’s plans to upgrade and enrich the region’s tourism product, with an emphasis on promoting Kourion internationally and attracting new visitors.
