Cyprus’s Chief Scientist Demetris Skourides held a series of meetings with European Union institutions and leadership in Brussels and the Netherlands last month, covering artificial intelligence, ocean policy, nuclear safety, and green energy innovation.

On the sidelines of the Women Who Built Europe Summit in Brussels, Skourides met with European Commissioner for Fisheries and Oceans Costas Kadis to discuss the role of artificial intelligence in supporting ocean-related policy, the press release says.

According to a press release, discussions focused on the European Ocean Pact and the Ocean Eye initiative, which combines European sensor-based technologies with AI to improve monitoring, forecasting and decision-making across marine environments.

“The Ocean Eye initiative represents a powerful convergence of European sensor-based technologies and artificial intelligence, enabling a shift from predictive insight to actionable intelligence,” Skourides said. “This transition is critical in equipping policymakers and decision-makers with the tools required to address complex ocean challenges in real time.”

On 19 and 20 March, Skourides represented Cyprus at the Board of Governors of the Joint Research Centre in Petten, Netherlands, the press release says. Discussions covered a range of topics including vehicle market surveillance, the DAPHNE methodology for diagnosing and forecasting hazards in nuclear emergencies, structural materials performance assessment, a joint JRC and TNO Code of Conduct for Energy Smart Appliances. They also covered the use of AI tools in testing and validating automated and autonomous driving systems.

Members of the Board also visited the InVesta Experience Centre, a living lab designed to bridge the gap between research and commercialisation in the green energy sector. The centre operates as an energy-positive innovation hub offering infrastructure for testing biomass and hydrogen technologies under real-world industrial conditions.

On the margins of the JRC visit, Skourides held a bilateral meeting with JRC Director-General Bernard Magenhann, focusing on how AI can strengthen the JRC’s Science for Policy mission and support the development of evidence-based policymaking tools across key sectors.
