Revolut customers in Cyprus struggled to make card payments, transfer money, withdraw cash and access their accounts on Tuesday after a fault in Google’s infrastructure disrupted the digital bank’s main services. The outage caused disruption for shops and for people trying to pay at card terminals or send money digitally.

Revolut says on its website that it has 450,000 users in Cyprus. Cypriot banks were not affected, and most customers do not appear to have been left without options, as most still hold accounts and cards with local banks they could use instead.

The fault appears to have been caused by an electrical problem in London, according to Google, which confirmed widespread disruption to its Google Cloud services that affected banking and other online platforms. Google said the fault occurred in its europe-west2-b zone, causing high error rates and intermittent network outages.

Revolut confirmed on Tuesday morning that its services were disrupted and linked the problem to Google Cloud from the outset, which Google later confirmed. Problems were also reported with other European banking and online services.

At the Forbes Cyprus Next Gen Banking & Fintech Summit about a week earlier, keynote speaker Costas Markides, a Cypriot professor at London Business School, asked delegates with a Revolut account to raise their hands. Many did, possibly the vast majority of those present. When he asked them to keep their hands up only if they did not also have an account with a traditional bank, just one hand remained.

Hundreds of problems with other services were reported on the Downdetector platform, including the British banks Lloyds and HSBC, the property website Rightmove and the postal service Royal Mail.
